No power in society, no hardship in your condition can depress you, keep you down...

No power in society, no hardship in your condition can depress you,
keep you down, in knowledge, power, virtue, influence, but by your own consent.

~William Ellery Channing, 1838

Life throws some pretty bad stuff at us, it's not easy for anyone. It's out of your control.

You do have a choice everyday...sometimes that choice involves any of the following empowering steps:

  • Ask for help
  • Accept assistance from others
  • Get informed
  • Take a step to distance yourself from people, places or situations that are not to your benefit.
  • Recognize and accept past error(s) as valuable lessons for the future, not a failure dictating who you are and will be.
  • This may be cliche to many but--it makes a difference in reality--Be a positive influence on yourself..say something positive everyday, build yourself up.  Your mind believes what you tell it..and your body reacts to that message.

It's not who you are that holds you back....

It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you're not.  ~Attributed to Hanoch McCarty

So who do you think you are not?  Sometimes we are getting the message from others that we are not..........not good enough, not strong enough, not loving enough,  just not enough.  Sometimes we are telling ourselves this story.

Make a list of your thoughts.   No really make a list, please!!! Just write down 3 things?  And if you don't have 3 things to say that's OK.   We are going to start off with just one anyway.

Once you have your list, look at each word or phrase separately and answer these questions>

Start with one item on your list:
1. How important is it to you to be this ..........?   If it isn't that important to you then let it go.   If it is important to you then move on to the following questions and actions.

2. Ask yourself why is it important?  It is something you want for yourself or it something that someone has told you you should be?  Is it truth or perhaps a story you have been lead to believe.  Do you want to be that person?

3. If this is something you want for yourself then create a plan for change.  Perhaps you need assistance in making the change or perhaps not. Reach out for help, if you do.  Actually reaching out may be your first step to change.

Beginning your plan
a. What is your goal?  What do you want to do, be or change?
b. What is one step or action can you take to make that change? Think Baby steps
c. Set a time when you will begin to take that small step.
d. Do it.
e. Repeat the process.

4.  And very important NOW MAKE A LIST OF WHAT YOU ARE..yes all the things you are and believe to be true of you.   Circle all the positive things about you.   There lies your strength.

If you are going to doubt something, doubt your limits. ~Don Ward

If you are going to doubt something, doubt your limits.  ~Don Ward

Maybe it's hard to believe that you have unlimited power in your life.  But you do…you have the ability to believe, image and create the life you desire.   I'm not saying this is magical..that creating an image in your mind will make it appear before you in real life… but your thoughts do have an overwhelming affect on your body and state of mind…. if you believe in the limits that someone else has placed on you or that you have placed on yourself, then those limits will control every decision, action and effort you make in your life.    Ask yourself…."what do they really know?  How can I be sure?"   Test these limits.  It will take effort, work and time..but you'll be surprised how far you will go.

....thinking makes it so

There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.  ~William Shakespeare, Hamlet, 1600

Everything you do, everyway you feel physically, emotionally and mentally, every action or inaction you take stems from your mindbody.   I'm not saying that everything that happens to us, or every illness that affects us is created in the mind body, but in every instance your way of thinking definitely controls your body on a cellular level and influences how you experience life.
Lets explore this concept together.
Over the next few weeks I'd like to discuss the book by Candace B. Pert, PhD,  Molecules of Emotion.

Molecules of Emotion April 2013

Candace Pert is an American neuroscientist and pharmacologist who discovered the opiate receptor, the cellular binding site for endorphins in the brain.

Before I began to write this page today, I thought that it's been a while since the book Molecules of Emotion was written (1997) and that perhaps I could find current information about Candace Pert or see her on video.  I have to say I was totally blown away..at first watching/listening to her speak was distracting, difficult..she is not the typical speaker.. she is brilliant, her mind full of ideas, connections and research.    And now she is leading a team of scientists who have created the Aids Vaccine. Brilliant..absolutely brilliant....

Listen to her speaking with Bill Moyers (1993)

Actions reflect your intent

"I have always thought the actions of men the best interpreters of their thoughts."  ~John Locke

This is the beginning of another new year and many people are thinking about the way life could be better, more enjoyable, healthier, more fruitful financially and emotionally.  Perhaps the thoughts involve major life decisions or changes.   Thinking about something and doing something, are two very different conditions.   I totally believe that problems need to be solved through a conscious decision-making process.
  1. Identify the problem or situation
  2. Consider your values (what is truly important to you) and what outcome is your goal
  3. Brainstorm ideas that may solve the problem or help you to move forward. By the way consider everything..don't nay say or put any idea down..the one that may seems the most bizarre could be the best solution.
  4. Look at the pros and cons of each solution
  5. Choose what you think will be the best one.. the one that will lead you to your outcome (goal, final result etc)
SO HERE IS THE CATCH...YOU MUST TAKE ACTION NOW!
Nothing will happen if you don't act  (MOVE.. JUST DO IT!!)

IF YOU ARE STUCK ASK FOR HELP!!!

anxiety about a diet

What some call health, if purchased by perpetual anxiety about diet, isn't much better than tedious disease.  ~George Dennison Prentice, Prenticeana, 1860

The goal in any weight loss program is that the client (you) become comfortable with their eating patterns and that food is not a constant thought. You are  satisfied with only the amount of food that your body needs in order to live a long, healthy life.   When food no longer is a substitute for fulfilling emotional needs, comfort and a way to deal with stress you will find that your eating habits have improved, you enjoy the food you do eat and you are conscious of the choices you make.   Although mindless eating patterns must be changed in order for weight loss to occur...that doesn't mean you stop thinking about the food you are eating..no you focus as you eat in the moment, savour the wonderful taste, flavors, sense the textures and enjoy each bite.
